States
Senior heavyweight John Clark
went 3-3 on the weekend to finish off his high school career with an
8th-place medal at this year's NJSIAA Wrestling Tournament at Boardwalk
Hall in Atlantic City.
Teammates Andrew Sherman and Bryan
Sternlieb came up short in their bids for medals in Atlantic City with
Sherman going 0-2 in the 160-pound bracket and Sternlieb finishing up
one win shy of a medal in the 171-pound bracket.

Senior
Bryan Sternlieb defeated previously unbeaten and defending Region
Champion Omar Akel of Long Branch, 3-2, to claim the 171-pound Region 6
Championship on Saturday. With the win, Sternlieb receives a bye into
the pre-quarterfinal round of the 2010 NJSIAA Wrestling Championships
in Atlantic City.
Joining Sternlieb in AC will be fellow seniors
Anthony Sherman and John Clark. Sherman, who recorded career win #100
at the tourney, defeated Colts Neck's Ryan King and Toms River North's
Ken Dougherty to advance to the finals where he was defeated by
returning State Champion Nick Visicaro of Long Branch.
Wrestling
as the 6th-seed, Clark defeated Keyport's Greg Velasco and Lacey's Mike
Stupiello to move into the final where he lost by fall to 2-time
defending State Champ Jimmy Lawson of Manchester.
Freshman Rich
Lewis had his season come to an end on Saturday, going 1-2 to finish in
the 5th/6th position at 103.

2010 Season Preview
Head Coach: Warren Reid (31st Season)
Some strong talent has been lost to graduation, including 2-time State Champ Vinnie DelleFave and State Placer Justin Molzon. Despite the losses to graduation, there is still some very strong talent returning, especially up top.
East will have one of the stronger group of upperweights around with a senior dominated group. Among them is returning State qualifier Bryan Sternlieb who has tallied 69 wins over the last two seasons. Anthony Sherman is a 2-time District medal winner and will be back at 160, while John D'Ambrosio and John Clark give the Raiders a strong 1-2 punch at 215 and heavyweight.
The lower half of the lineup will be a bit of a question mark. Junior Johnny Resto is the most experienced wrestler here by a country mile. He'll be looked to carry a group that will be made up primarily of wrestlers getting their first taste of varsity action, including talented incoming frosh Vinny Rotella at 103.

Wrestler To Watch - (Sr) Bryan Sternlieb
Sternlieb capped a strong 2009 with a trip to Atlantic City. Things didn't go his way down there as he was eliminated in the opening round. He's a strong favorite to make a return trip in 2010, and is definitely capable of reaching the podium.
DESPO's Outlook
Where the Raiders are strong, they are very strong. Throughout the rest of the lineup though there are quite a few question marks. A lot of new faces will be inserted into the lineup, especially in the middle, and it may take a bit before East really gets going. The veterans on this team are going to rack up the wins, so East will remaine very competitive and pick up their share of victories during the adjustment period. If the newcomers really catch on, the Raiders could be a very tough team the 2nd half of the season.

3/8: DelleFave Wins 2nd State Title; Molzon Takes 4th
Senior Vinnie DelleFave put an exclamation mark on his stellar high school career on Sunday by defeating Paulsboro's Joe Duca, 4-3, in the ultimate tiebreaker to claim his 2nd straight NJSIAA Championship.
DelleFave, 38-1, buzzsawed through the competition on his way to the final scoring a pin, a tech fall, and an 11-4 decision in his first three bouts.
In the 119-pound final, with neither wrestler being able to score off the other from their feet, it came down to the ultimate tiebreaker. Having scored first, DelleFave elected to start on bottom and Duca was unable to ride him out as DelleFave scored the escape to make it back to back titles.
For his career, DelleFave finishes with a career mark of 145-7. A 2-time State champ, a 4-time State placer, a 4-time Region champ, and a 3-time District champ, DelleFave will continue his wrestling career next year at Rutgers University.
Also completing his high school career with a trip to the Boardwalk Hall podium was 152-pounder Justin Molzon. Molzon, 29-7, went 5-2 on the weekend, with both of his losses coming by one point to Southern's Frank Miele. Molzon's wins included a 9-5 win over undefeated Region 8 champion John Bakuckas of Hammonton, a pin in 1:30 over Region 4 champion Vin Maurillo of Nutley, and a pin in 2:36 over Region 7 champion Justin Pencook of Cinnaminson.
Molzon's finsihes with a career record of 112-23, 3 Region 6 medals and 3 District 24 medals, including a championship in 2007 while at Lacey.
Juniors Anthony Sherman (160) and Bryan Sternlieb (171) came up short in their bids for State medals. Sherman went 2-2 on the weekend to finish just one win away from a trip to the podium. Sternlieb was defeated in the opening round, 7-3, by George Goddiess of Hillsborough.

Bryan Sternlieb decisioned Anthony Saulle of Delran, a 3rd place finisher in NJ in 2008, by a score of 5-4 to claim the 171-pound title at the Hunterdon Central Tournament. Vinnie DelleFave won the 125-pound title, knocking of Hunterdon Central's Brian Bistis in the final by a score of 10-4. Both wrestlers were 4-0 on the day and improved their records to 8-0 on the year. Eight of Sternlieb's wins have come by fall.
