2019 Season Preview

After a long string of losing seasons, East turned the corner in 2018, putting together their first winning season since 2008. Seven starters return, and some promising newcomers are entering the lineup, as the Raiders look to continue their winning ways in 2019.

The strength of the lineup looks to be at the run from 120-132. Sophomore Michael Conklin had a huge debut season for East, winning the District 26 Title and advancing to Atlantic City after placing 3rd in the Region. Fellow sophomore Eddie Totten also had a strong rookie campaign, registering 23 victories. Those two are joined by 4-year starter Alexander Gorlin, who earned his 2nd District medal last season. That trio provides a good nucleus down low as East breaks in some new faces into the lineup, including promising frosh Joe McCullough and Gavin Singer.

James Racanelli is another who started as a freshman for East last year, and is looking towards bigger things this year with the year to his credit. The sophomore will be the lone returning starter in the middleweights as East has new faces expected to enter the lineup here.

Up top, senior Cesar Serrano, junior Diego Leoner, and sophomore Oscar Serrano are all returning starters. East will be looking to them to step up this season and lead some more new faces in the upperweights.

As usual, East has a schedule that will test the team all season long, especially with the A-South divisional slate. The team got rolling as the year went on last year, qualifying for the Sectionals and winning 7 of their final 9 duals. They'll be looking for that momentum to carry over to this year as they aim for another winning season and a return to Sectionals. If the upperweights step up here, and the newcomers progress, they should be able to keep things rolling in the right direction.
