Over a dozen wrestlers with varsity experience return, and the team has put in a solid off-season of work, as the Raiders will look to end a streak of three consecutive losing seasons.
The lower half of the lineup will feature a mixture of solid returning talent, and some promising newcomers. The main returner is Richard Lewis, a Region 6 champ and State medal winner in 2011. He's joined by District medal winners Jacob Maher and Mike Veneziano, who were both 20 match winners a year ago.
East had some young guys take some lumps in the upper half of the lineup in 2011 with a pretty brutal schedule. That experience should pay off as they're a year older and all returning around the same weights or lower. They do have a very solid returner in heavyweight Fernando Perez, who was a Region qualifier at heavyweight last season. This should be a much improved bunch.
This is a very balanced and experienced roster. The schedule, as it always is at East, is tough, but the Raiders have enough returning and have put in hard work to get the team back to a winning season.
Wrestler To Watch - (Jr) Richard Lewis
Lewis got hot at the right time in 2011, responding to a 2nd place at the Districts with a Region championship and a 7th place medal at the NJSIAA Championships. He'll be a part of one of the tougher weight classes in the Shore this year, but has enough talent to return to the Boardwalk Hall podium in March.
